Austurland, also known as the Eastern Region, is a region in eastern Iceland characterized by its jagged coastline of fjords, often referred to as the Eastfjords (Austfirðir). It has an area of 15,706 square kilometers (6,064 sq mi) and a population of 11,085 as of 2024. The region is known for its dramatic landscapes, including mountains, waterfalls, and the Stuðlagil gorge, and its economy is increasingly driven by tourism and industry alongside its traditional fishing.
