Íslensk stjórnvöld, or the Icelandic government, operates as a parliamentary representative democratic republic where the President is the head of state and the Prime Minister leads the government in a multi-party system. Executive power is held by the government, while legislative power is shared between the government and the Althingi, Iceland's parliament. The government is currently exploring sending an airplane to the Middle East to assist Icelandic citizens in the region who wish to return home.
