The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is a U.S. federal government agency responsible for the nation's civilian space program and aeronautics research. Iceland plays a significant role for NASA as a training ground due to its unique volcanic landscapes, glaciers, and geothermal areas, which serve as planetary analogs for the Moon and Mars. Astronauts, including those from the Apollo missions and the upcoming Artemis II mission, have trained in Iceland to prepare for lunar and Martian exploration, studying geology and testing equipment in conditions that mimic other celestial bodies.
