Gervigreind is the Icelandic term for Artificial Intelligence (AI), derived from "gervi-" meaning imitation or artificial, and "greind" meaning intelligence. It is no longer a distant future vision in the Icelandic legal system but a tool already in use. The Icelandic government has an action plan to promote Iceland as a leader in the responsible use of AI, aiming to create opportunities and progress for all citizens. Iceland's abundant renewable energy sources, primarily geothermal and hydroelectric power, make it an attractive location for energy-intensive AI operations like large language models, offering reduced carbon footprints and natural cooling advantages for data centers.
