Heimaey

Staður

Heimaey is the largest and only inhabited island in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago, located off the south coast of Iceland. It is renowned for its dramatic volcanic history, particularly the 1973 eruption of Eldfell, which significantly reshaped the island's landscape and led to the evacuation of its entire population. The island, whose name means "home island" in Icelandic, is a hub for fishing and tourism, home to around 4,500 residents, and is a crucial nesting ground for millions of Atlantic puffins. Eyjagöng is a project company exploring the feasibility of constructing a subsea road tunnel between mainland Iceland and Heimaey to reduce uncertainty regarding construction costs.
